BEST DAD EVER 2017 WINNERS:
LAWRENCE GARRISON and CALVIN GORHAM
I had the privilege of meeting with Best Dad Ever 2017 Winner Lawrence Graham today and presenting his winning $100 gift card. Really cool guy. See for yourself.
This nomination touched the hearts of our judges, and made Lawrence Garrison an easy selection:
"I've known Mr. Garrison for almost 14 years. During this time I have witnessed his undying passion for helping children in need. He has always gone above and beyond to be a strong father figure and positive presence in the lives of children in the community by mentoring, coaching, providing homework assistance, initiating clothing drives, hosting fundraisers, volunteering at local schools, and the list goes on. After becoming a father himself unexpectedly over 3 years ago, he didn't hesitate to step up to the plate by owning his responsibility and being a true father to his daughter. He supports his daughter in countless ways, not just financially. He has taught his daughter the importance of having a personal relationship with God by bringing her to church, teaching her the Bible, and teaching her how to pray at a very early age. Although he is very busy with his many business ventures and community endeavors, he finds time every week to help his daughter with her homework, assist her with bath time, and tuck her safely into bed. He cares for his daughter on weekends, holidays, and every chance he gets. He exposes her to new and different things to spark her curiosity and enhance her knowledge, growth, and development. He has taught her the importance of family and instilled in her the virtues of love, respect, discipline, kindness, and caring...Not only do they look alike but they share a special connection that is evident by anyone who encounters them. She has opened his heart up to love in ways he never imagined and to see the world and relationships through a whole new lens. He now knows what it means to love unconditionally. As a result of his excellent parenting, his daughter has become a bright, energetic, intelligent, well-adjusted, precocious, thoughtful, loving, and articulate 3-year old. She is beautiful, wise beyond her years, and has a witty and silly sense of humor she inherited from her Dad...
Winner Calvin Gorham was working - and working - and working - so we agreed that I would mail his giftcard. He sent a kind note, however, and we want to congratulate him on doing the hard work to give his girls the best life ever. His nomination was a powerful read:
"I would like to nominate My Brother Calvin Gorham as he is truly making it happen minute by minute for his Beautiful Girls...Up early in the am and shutting it down well into the night, packing bags, dropping off, running in from work, eyes heavy and all, picking up [the girls] from childcare and back out to the girls basketball game...Sincere Love, Care, and Support not because he has to but because he has a deep love, care and responsibility to lead by great example no matter how challenging the situations that may be surrounding him...My Brother, may you and all of the other Fathers/Dads stand strong and lean not on your own understanding! "Iron Sharpens Iron"
